About Me
I’m a British guy who has spent most of his life travelling, always seeking out new places, people and experiences. I was 16 when I first left Britain, I worked on a farm in Switzerland, then hitch hiked home across Europe. I’ve never looked back, always looking for new places on the globe to explore, as well as going back to some old favourites. To date I’ve now been to 112 countries.
Along the way I’ve been a barman, life insurance salesman, a porter in an operating theater, served in the Intelligence Corp, been a social worker – including running a Probation Hostel, spent two years in the Sudan working as a teacher, managed a bookshop and wielded a cane knife in a banana plantation.
For most of the last twenty years I’ve worked in Books and publishing, working for companies like Harper Collins and Lonely Planet and specializing in selling books in Europe.
With Louise, my partner of thirty years, I’ve had two career breaks; from 1994 – 98 which took in most of Asia and Australia/NZ, and which included fourteen months living and working in Hong Kong. In 2005 we set off again to the US, Central and South America, Southern Africa and India/Nepal. I’ve contributed to the ‘Career Break Book’ by Lonely Planet and helped update several guidebooks.
On my second career break I started writing and keeping a blog, which this website links to, as well as being the place for all my new writing – because the adventure continues.
I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1992 and when not travelling I live in St Albans, Hertfordshire, England.
